What is a travel nurse?

What is a compact state?

A compact state is a designated state that partakes in the Nurse Licensure Compact. In partaking compact states, nurses can practice across state lines with a multi-state license.

How long can a travel nurse stay in one place?

Typically, assignments range from 8 to 13 weeks. However, we can often be flexible and offer shorter or longer assignments based on your specific needs. And many times, the hospital/facility offer the option for you to extend your assignment.

Can I be a travel nurse in my own state?

Yes! We have plenty of local "travel" opportunities. With our local travel program, you can still enjoy all the benefits of travel nursing, without leaving your family or the comforts of your home. What are the minimum travel nursing requirements?

The minimum travel nursing requirements depend on your area of specialty, as well as the facility, unit and sometimes even the location of the position. The facilities we work with have different requirements and preferences, but the majority of them request a minimum one year of experience. 

How do I get a travel nursing license?

Assignments
How long are travel nursing assignments?

Travel nursing assignments range anywhere from 4-24 weeks. However, the most common travel nursing assignment length is 13 weeks.

Can I take time off between assignments?

Yes! That is one of the benefits of travel nursing. Travel nursing allows you to remain flexible and take time off of working between assignments. However, to remain eligible for benefits provided by American Mobile, you must begin an assignment within 25 days of your last assignment. For more information, contact your recruiter.

What happens after I complete my assignment?

After completing an assignment, it is up to you whether you want to continue traveling or not! However, if you want to take another assignment, it is beneficial to connect with your recruiter to ensure you have enough time to complete all necessary documents for your next adventure.

How long will it take to approve my application and start my assignment?

Some travelers start their first assignment a week after submitting their application, while others plan their assignments several months down the road. How quickly you can start traveling depends on whether your documentation is in order and if your license is current for the state where you will be practicing. If it isn’t, don’t worry — we’ll help you get all the paperwork and credential requirements organized in time for your assignment start date.

Are there any fees with your services?

No, never. Our hospital clients pay for our services.

I am from Canada. Can I travel to U.S.?

How will I get to my assignment?

It's best to drive or have your vehicle transported to your assignment, since you'll want to explore your new surroundings and go sightseeing on your days off. If, however, you accept an assignment in a major city where parking is scarce and public transportation is readily available, you can probably do without a car. We will always ensure that you have detailed instructions on how to get to your destination and your new workplace.

Housing
Is housing really covered?

Yes, you will be provided with either a housing subsidy or you can elect for private, furnished company provided housing on every assignment no matter where you travel.

How much do traveling nurses get for housing?

Housing stipends vary based on the market in the location of your assignment and typically align with the cost of a one-bedroom apartment short term lease. Due note, there are additional aspects that can impact the housing budget, such as; seasonality and other assignment factors.  

Where do travel nurses find housing?

Travel nurses use online resources like Furnishedfinder.com, Airbnb.com, Apartments.com and other websites to search for housing accommodations. If you choose the housing stipend and decide later that you would rather have our housing executives help you, we will take over the house or apartment hunting on your behalf.

Can I travel with my pet(s)?

Absolutely! Travel nursing with pets is a great way to share the fun and excitement of your travel experiences. If you choose to travel with your pets, please let your recruiter know before you confirm your assignment to ensure you have the proper housing accommodations. Learn more about travel nurse housing.

What type of housing do you provide?

Our standard housing package consists of a free, private, one-bedroom apartment. In some locations, studio apartments are offered. Our housing department works with only the most reputable apartment communities to provide you with comfortable and attractive housing conveniently located near your assignment.
