Maine Nursing License

Have you ever pictured yourself wandering through towering pine trees and gentle rock streams on your next hike? Or bundling up next to a fire while snow slowly drifts outside? All of these scenarios and more could be your reality as a travel nurse in the beautiful state of Maine!

As the northeasternmost U.S. state, travel nurses in Maine enjoy plenty of outdoor recreational activities, beautiful lakes, and proximity to other New England states. It’s easy to visit cities like New York City or Boston on your days off.

Apply for a Maine Nursing License with our Help

All RN licenses are issued by the Maine State Board of Nursing. This includes new applications, renewals, endorsements, and lapses.

Like many other states, you have the option to apply for an RN license by examination or endorsement. The examination is for new graduate nurses who do not have a state license, an endorsement is for those that already hold an active RN license in another state.

The fee for endorsement is $75 and requires the following items:

  • Completed application
  • Recent passport-type photograph
  • Verification of licensure from your original state of Registered Professional Nurse licensure through Nursys. Note: Some states do not participate in the NURSYS verification (please check with your state to confirm)
  • A criminal background check (CBC) must be completed through the Maine Department of Public of Safety (DPS) and the FBI based on a set of fingerprints provided

The fee for the examination is also $75 and requires the following items:

  • Completed application
  • Recent passport-type photograph
  • Original source transcripts with degree conferred (for graduates of out-of-state programs only)
  • A criminal background check (CBC) must be completed through the Maine Department of Public of Safety (DPS) and the FBI based on a set of fingerprints provided

How to Renew Your License

Nurse licensing renewals can also be completed online and renewal dates are dependent upon your birth date. Depending on your date of birth, your license will be active for at least one year and no more than two years. After you renew your license for the first time, you will renew your license every two years on or before your birthday.

According to the State of Maine Nursing Board, over 90% of nurses with Maine licenses are successfully renewing online. There is no grace period for renewals, and failure to renew your license on or before your birth date on the year it is due results in a lapsed license.

Is Maine a Compact State for Nursing?

Good news! Maine is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact.

To apply for a multi-state license you must:

1. Reside in an NLC state, and you must declare an NLC state as your primary state of residency;

2. Be actively licensed as an RN;

3. Meet any requirements for licensure held by your home state. When practicing nursing in any location, you will also be held to the standards of the state where the patient or practice is located.
