Is New Jersey a Compact Nursing State?
Working as a travel nurse in New Jersey is about to get easier! In July 2019, the governor signed legislation for New Jersey to become part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which allows RNs or LPNs to have one multistate nursing license. The compact is currently undergoing implementation in the state.
There are now more than 39 states that participate in the NLC. If you hold a multistate license in a compact state, issued by your primary state of residency, you will soon be able to work travel nursing jobs in New Jersey without applying for a new license.

How to Get a New Jersey License by Endorsement
Until the NLC legislation is fully implemented, nurses with a multistate license will still need to apply for licensure by an endorsement through the New Jersey Board of Nursing (NHBON), as will any nurses who hold an active license in another state.
Nurses can submit a paper application and other documents through the mail or submit their application via the MyLicense website, run by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
Applicants for a nursing license by endorsement will need to provide:
- A completed application and endorsement checklist
- Payment of $200 application and licensing fee
- A clear, original passport photograph, 2” x 2”
- A copy of a birth certificate, passport, or official immigration documents
- Fingerprint cards (for FBI and NJ) and authorization for background check
- Verification of all current and former nursing licenses
Need to Renew Your License? Here's How:
Licenses in New Jersey are up for renewal every two years, and renewal applications can be submitted via the MyLicense portal run by the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs. Registered nurses who are applying for renewal must have completed 30 contact hours of continuing education in the previous two years, and pay the license fee of $120.
