How to Get a Nursing License in Rhode Island

Obtaining a Rhode Island nursing license all starts with a visit to the Rhode Island Board of Nursing.

Here are some quick, high-level facts to know before you begin the licensing process:

  • Rhode Island is no longer a Compact State as of 2018 (more info on that below)
  • A temporary license is good for 90 days, is issued only once, and takes approximately 4 weeks
  • A permanent RN license takes approximately 8 weeks
  • NURSYS participating

Like many other states, there are two primary pathways to obtaining a Rhode Island nursing license:

  • Examination
  • Endorsement

Nurses who hold an active license in another state may apply by endorsement, while new graduates must obtain a license by examination. The licensing fee is currently $135.

Documents needed for getting your Rhode Island nursing license:

  1. Completed application
  2. Transcripts
  3. Photocopy of active, out-of-state-license (endorsement)
  4. Recent passport-type photo
  5. Copy of evidence of primary address
  6. Verification from all states of licensure (endorsement)

Need to Renew Your Nursing License?

RNs seeking to renew a nursing license must complete 10 continuing education hours during every two-year licensing cycle, two of those hours must be about substance abuse.

Licenses expire March 1 every two years following the date of issuance of the original license. And not to worry, if you already hold an active license, you will get a reminder! Renewal notices are sent out 60 days before your expiration date. The fee for a Rhode Island nursing license renewal is currently $135.

Rhode Island Is Not A Compact State

Rhode Island is currently not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) as of January 2018, but awaiting on pending legislation. You can view a list of the most recent NLC states and information.
