How to Apply for a Nursing License in South Carolina
Obtaining your nursing license can be done online by visiting the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina website. Here, you can apply for a new license or renewal. For new applicants, there are two primary pathways: exam and endorsement.
A license by endorsement is for RNs who already hold an active license in another state, and a license by exam is for new nurse graduates. Both of the applications can be completed online through the system.
The fee schedule for South Carolina nursing licenses is as follows:
- RN Examination - $90
- RN Re-Examination - $65
- Endorsement without Temporary License - $100
- Endorsement w/Temporary License - $110

- RN License verifications must be requested online at www.nursys.com.
Renewing your South Carolina Nursing License
If you already hold an active South Carolina nursing license, you can begin looking for travel nurse positions! It is important to be mindful of your expiration and renewal dates as well as the associated fees. Currently, the fee for renewals is $75.
Additionally, renewals also require you to meet continuous education requirements. For South Carolina license renewals, contact hours must be completed during the licensure period and may not be carried over to the next licensure period.
According to the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and the South Carolina Board of Nursing, the Biennial Renewal of an active license requires documented evidence of at least ONE of the following requirements during the licensure period:
- Completion of thirty contact hours from a continuing education provider recognized by the board; OR
- Maintenance of certification or re-certification by a national certifying body recognized by the board; OR
- Completion of an academic program of study in nursing or a related field recognized by the board; OR
- Verification of competency and the number of hours practiced as evidenced by employer certification on a form approved by the Board.
South Carolina and the Nurse Licensure Compact
South Carolina joined the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) back in 2017. Since then, nurses with a South Carolina multi-state nursing license can practice in any other state within the compact without having to obtain an additional state license.
