Getting started as a travel nurse in Texas doesn’t have to be a difficult or confusing process. It all starts with obtaining a Texas nursing license.
Texas Nursing License 101
The first step to getting a nursing license in the state of Texas starts with a visit to the Texas Board of Nursing website*. Like many other states, nurses have two options to apply for a Texas nursing license: by endorsement or examination.
Nurses may apply for a Texas RN license by endorsement if they meet all three of the following criteria:
- They have a U.S. Social Security Number and
- No eligibility issues to disclose to the Texas Board of Nursing such as criminal or disciplinary history and
- The ability to pay the $186.00 application fee by credit card or electronic check
Graduates of nursing schools who have not passed the NCLEX need to apply for a Texas Nursing License by examination. There is a $100 fee for this process.
Texas Board of Nursing License and Renewal
Nurses who already hold a nursing license in Texas are required to keep their license active by renewing it during the appropriate times. In only five simple steps, nurses can renew their Texas nursing license online through the Board and will be able to receive their license promptly. Furthermore, nurses can verify their license renewal online within two business days.
There is also a Texas nursing license option for RNs that may have a lapse in their practice. According to the Texas Board of Nursing, six-month temporary permits are issued to nurses who have not been employed as a RN during the past four years and are used for the purpose of completing a refresher program, extensive orientation to the practice of nursing, or a nursing program of study under the supervision of an RN Instructor.
Texas and the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)
Texas is proud to be a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. The NLC is a great resource for nurses because it allows them to practice in other states that are part of the compact. As long as you have a license in an NLC state, you can travel to other states within the NLC. It is a win-win for everyone, and those with a Texas nursing license can reap the benefits.
